Learning to sew a dress

Recently I bought a simple oversized black dress. Nothing fancy, it's very casual and incredibly comfy but still super cute. Because it's so easy to throw on, it's become a staple in my summer wardrobe and I always get a million compliments when I wear it. Basically I never want to take it off and wish I had a dozen more just like it. So the other day I happened to glance at the simple stitching on the seam of this plain ol' dress and thought to myself, hmmm...could I make something like this!?

I've owned a sewing machine for years and am handy when it comes to sewing a hem or creating basic pieces...curtains, a pillow case, a scarf...but that's pretty much where my skill set ends. I've played with the idea of making my own clothes for a while now. It seems like such a romantic idea, very slow-living and harkening back to a different time. So I did a little research and brushing up on my skills. Using my dress as a guide, my plan is to create a pattern and assembling the garment. Wish me luck!

I'll keep you all posted and let you know how the dress turns out. Fingers crossed!

Have you ever made an article of clothing? Did you create it from a pattern or replicate it from an existing piece? I'd love to hear your tips and secrets as I'll most likely need all the help I can get! ;)

  1. I know when I first started making my own clothes dresses were the easiest! Can't wait to see the finished product.
