I'VE BEEN KEEPING A SECRET...
Let me start by saying that I absolutely hate secrets. Maybe it's my type A personality, but I can't stand when surprises are kept from me, and it's literally torture for me to hold in classified information. But man, oh man, have I been sitting on a big ol juicy (super adorable) secret for months now. I'm having a baby, you guys! Phew, it feels SO good to spill the beans!
Meet our little one, who we've affectionately nicknamed Moon Pie. I'm 6 months along now, due October 14th, and Matt and I are beside-ourselves-excited! Moon Pie is a way active little baby (punching and kicking like crazy!), loves listening to Neil Young, and doing yoga. And I'm a happy and healthy mama-to-be, with a constant craving for spinach and egg salad and berries.
Thanks for sharing in our happiness! I can't wait to share more with you as we get our lives and our home ready for this little bundle of joy! (And in case you're wondering, our t-shirts came from here.)

Desert Dreaming
I'm hopping a plane to Caifornia next week for some much needed R&R. While I've been to the Bay Area a few times before, this will be my first time in Southern California. We're spending a couple of days in LA visiting with friends before we road trip out to Palm Springs + Joshua Tree to do nothing but relax and soak up our surroundings. OMG, am I so excited!! I've never been to desert before (unless you count Las Vegas and I certainly don't) and I'm anticipating it to be such an incredibly inspiring experience. Living in the midwest, I too often take for granted all the mind blowing terrain in this country that lives just a short plane ride away.
So here's the part where you give me all your recommendations for everything cool to see, do, shop, eat, and drink in and around Los Angeles, Palm Springs, and Joshua Tree. Let's hear it! See you next week when I get back.

Weekend Vibes with Free People
Talk about some serious radio silence around these parts, huh? Life has been more than a little nutty for us lately- it's been a busy season of change and excitement (more on that later- but we promise not to stay gone so long anymore, k!?) So over the weekend, I took some time out to just relax and soak up the Spring weather that is finally rolling into Chicago. It was absolutely blissful! Donuts for breakfast, naps in the park, lots of walks in the sunshine, and plenty of patio hangs. It was just the type of slow and sweet weekend I needed to recharge.
My friends at Free People asked me to document my Sunday on the Free People Chicago Instagram account. It was fun to style warmer weather pieces and show off some of my favorite spots around the city. There's something about wandering your own town snapping photos like a tourist that's super inspiring, don't you think?
How'd you spend your weekend? Hope it involved lots of relaxing and sunshine. Oh, and donuts too! Xx. Lauren

Caring for Your Skin with UNDER AURORA
Last year I began to incorporate more all-natural and plant based products into my daily life. The first things to go were household cleaners and laundry detergent. It was pretty freaky when I actually sat down and read the list of chemicals contained in the stuff lurking under my sink. Then I cleared my pantry of processed packaged foods and filled my fridge with whole foods. The last to go was my skincare, makeup, and beauty products. After all, it's just as important that what I put ON my body is as nourishing and healthy as what I put IN my body.
All in all, it feels so amazing to know I'm using products that are not only good for the environment but also good for me. But I'll be honest, the switch to chemical free hasn't always been easy. You'll still find a few cheats in my medicine cabinet (I'm only human and I can't live without my Ruby Woo)! And until recently, I had a hard time finding a skin care line that met my chemical-free criteria and actually felt like it was working.
Enter Under Aurora, a line of all-natural, plant-based body and facial care products, and fragrances based in Columbus, Ohio. Their approach to skin care makes so much sense. "We believe that the products you put on your face & body should always be simple, natural, and pure. We use only 100% pure essential oils and plant botanicals in all of our products." Plus all of their products are cruelty-free and bottled in eco-friendly packaging. I'm absolutely obsessed!
But I love Under Aurora for so many more reasons than just the good vibes they're putting out there into the beauty industry. Their products have totally changed my skin in the most lovely way. I use the Gentle Facial Cleanser, Balancing Facial Toner, Nourishing Facial Oil daily. A couple times a week I use the Brightening Facial Scrub. I also moisturize my whole body daily with the Coconut Oil Spray (and occasionally spritz a little in my hair for some extra deep conditioning). My skin is softer, brighter, and more clear than it's been years!
The cleanser is perfect for all skin types (mine is a combination of both dry and oily AND super sensitive) and leaves my skin feeling fresh and clean without being drying. The toner is made from rose water, lavender water, and aloe vera and smells heavenly! And omg do I love the nourishing facial oil. This stuff is like food for your face. Ingredients like rosehip seed and carrot oil are packed full of vitamins and Golden Jojoba oil not only moisturizes dry skin but it also thins sebum helping to prevent acne and regulate oil production.
As if I couldn't love this line anymore, Under Aurora is offering an exclusive flash sale on all their facial care products just for Foxtail + Moss readers! Today through Wednesday, enter the promo code: FOXTAILMOSS at check out for 30% off. Do yourself and your skin a favor!

Drink Up. Live Well. with Harvest Juicery
I seriously can't believe the end of February is upon us! Anybody else feel like this year is flying by? This month has been all about cleansing for me. And I mean that in every possible sense of the word! I've been purging, deep cleaning, and organizing my house like mad (I recently read The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up and it really struck a cord with me). All that shedding of possessions got me thinking about deep cleaning other areas of my life. Try as I might to stay on a healthy course, the winter months make it waaaaay too tempting to splurge on junk food while Netflix binging wrapped in a blanket on my couch. Basically, me and the gym and vegetables haven't been on speaking terms lately.
To jump start a cleaner lifestyle I called in back up from local juice shop, Harvest Juicery. I mean, their motto is "Drink Up. Live Well." and that's something I can get behind! Their cold-pressed juices and made in house smoothies are such a fresh and yummy way to ensure I'm getting my daily dose of veggies. Not to mention, their oh so dreamy minimalist store front in Fulton Market has me feeling some kind of way! Below, we're giving you the skinny on Harvest.
So what exactly is cold-pressed juice and why is it better than the regular stuff, you ask? It’s juice that’s hydraulically pressed – a fancy press that does not generate any heat and keeps the temperature of the product without oxidizing. Thousands of pounds of pressure are applied to extract the juice leaving each bottle packed with enzymes and nutrients that are otherwise robbed in other juicing methods. Each bottle of Harvest Juicery juice contains 2-3 pounds of vegetables. I also love that at Harvest, all of the fruits and vegetables that go into their juice are organic or locally sourced. They incorporate fresh herbs and spices in each and every bottle that not only awaken your taste buds but nourish your body. And that’s why it tastes so good!
Now that I'm hooked on Harvest (the Grapefruit and Green #2 are my favorite), I'm thinking about giving their 3 Day Cleanse a try. And because Harvest Juicery is like a modern day milkman with their amazing delivery service, getting my hands on healthy fresh-pressed juice is that much easier!
Feeling ready to get juiced? Check out our Instagram today for an extra juicy giveaway. One lucky follower is going to score a sampler pack of 3 Harvest Juicery juices!
*Since Harvest Juicery juices are unpasteurized, it’s best to enjoy them within 72 hours to ensure the highest quality, health benefits, and taste.

HOMEMADE // DIY Good Vibes Essential Oil Perfume
I sort of play the field when it comes to perfume. I can never decided on a signature scent! Sometimes I'm in the mood for girly and floral, others times I dig something sexy and earthy, and I know that I always love vanilla undertones. Shopping for fragrances to fit my every whim can get pricey. Plus traditional perfumes are often formulated with toxic chemicals that can seep into the skin- and that's just scary no matter how great I smell! So I decided to try my hand at a homemade body spray using essential oils. I had a ton of fun playing scent mixologist and I am loving my new perfume!
I dropped a charged crystal into the bottle for an extra boost of good vibes every time I spray on the scent. Warm a small crystal between your palms to increase the stones energy. Concentrate on positive thoughts and intentions. Drop the crystal into the glass bottle and let those good vibes infuse your perfume!
Carrier Oil (like Vegetable Glycerine)
1-3 Essentail Oils
Water
Glass Spray Bottle
Glass Spray Bottle
* You want to pick a carrier oil that doesn't have a competing scent. I used vegetable glycerine because I like how lightweight it feels on my skin. Jojoba oil is another great option and has a nice long shelf life! Essential oils are concentrated aromatic compounds extracted from plants. Be sure that your essential oil does not come pre-mixed into a carrier oil as many do.
In an amber glass spray bottle, mix your carrier oil, essential oils, and water together. For every teaspoon of carrier oil, add 2 tablespoons of water, and anywhere between 20-50 drops of essential oil per scent. This can vary depending on the essential oils you use and how memorable or subtle you’d like your perfume to be. Start slow, you can always add more fragrance after your concoction has had a chance to mellow. I used sandal wood, lavender, and 1/8 teaspoon of vanilla extract!
Keep perfume in a cool, dark place (an amber glass spray bottle will do) as heat can alter the color and scent.

HOW TO / Brew the Perfect Cup with Spirit Tea
I'm a coffee addict through and through. But these frozen winter months have given me a serious appreciation for tea. Brewing a cup in the evening has become part of my routine before turning in for the night, not only because it warms my chilled bones, but because I've come to love the ritual of it all. Boiling the water, steeping the leaves, adding a drizzle of honey, and inhaling that comforting herb-y smell. So I was super excited to spend a recent afternoon with Taylor Cowan, co-founder of Spirit Tea, nerding out about the long standing traditions and ceremonies behind brewing tea.
Spirit is a local tea company bringing small-batch, seasonally curated harvests from family farms straight to your teapot. Seeking to honor the rare energy, craftsmanship and process behind the experience of tea, the name Spirit derives from a Latin word meaning "to breath". But in a clever double entendre, Spirit also references the volatile oils extracted from tea leaves by water— this is what we drink- the essence, the spirit of the leaves. You won't find overly sweetened or fruit infused teas here- the boys behind Spirit are total purists. They let the leaves do the talking and ohmygod do they make one smooth flavorful cup of tea! Below, Taylor schools us on how to brew the perfect cup.
How to Brew Loose Leaf Tea //
Before you begin: Water. The most overlooked step in brewing a great cup of tea. Tea is 99% water. This isn't to say that tap water isn't ideal—municipal sources are different everywhere—but if you want a consistent, more balanced cup of tea, carbon-filtered water is the way to go. I recommend the Soma pitcher.
1. Warm the water. Variable temperature kettles work wonders in this sense. I recommend the Bonavita.
Optionally, you can pre-warm the vessels: cup, teapot and pitcher. Fill them each with a bit (no more than 1/4 full) of warmed water. Let sit for a few moments, then empty. I like this step because it both creates a beautiful spectacle of steam and hot, clear water but also prepares your vessels for a more consistent brew. You'll notice when you place your dry leaves into a "warmed" vessel, that the heat and moisture will release delicate fragrances.
2. Dose your fresh whole-leaf tea. If you're not sure how much, start with the instructions it came with. Generally about 1 tablespoon of tea per eight ounces of water, or, weightwise, 1/2 gram of tea per ounce of water.
Tip: Give the leaves plenty of room to breathe. Tea balls, manatees, pens, etc (I can't keep up with the things they come up with these days) are cute but incredibly restrictive to leaf unfurling, if you can fit a good, whole-leaf tea in it in the first place. Any decent teapot, infuser, gaiwan (like what I'm brewing in below), or french press will do.
3. When the water reaches the correct temperature, remove lid and pour over leaves smoothly, steadily.
4. Replace the lid and brew for desired length of time. Use less time (1-2 minutes) for greens & oolongs, more for whites & blacks (4-5 minutes).
5. Once time has elapsed, decant infusion into another vessel (pitcher or large enough mug). It is crucial that you empty the entire infusion. Whatever you don't empty will continue super-steeping in the teapot.
6. Sip deeply, sip slowly. Savor tastes and aromas imbued in another part of the world.
7. Re-steep! It is criminal not to re-steep a well-made, whole-leaf tea. You'll also get more tea for your buck. Repeat steps 2-5, up to three or four times.
Not only is Spirit Tea bringing handmade traditional tea to the masses, they're also passionate about helping the environment through their Teas for Trees program. For every purchase of Spirit Tea, a tree is planted in the Au Sable National Forrest in Michigan. I love that!
You can find Spirit Tea in a few of my favorite local cafes, like Gaslight Coffee Roasters and Cafe Integral, or check out their selection here!

We're Loving... Palm Leaf Print EVERYTHING!
Image via Pinterest
Are you guys digging the oversized tropical leaf trend? Palm leaf prints and banana leaf patterns started popping up on the design scene here and there last year and we are absolutely gaga for them! Maybe it's all this dreary Winter weather (anyone face Storm Jonas head on over the weekend?) but we're tempted to cover every last thing in a frond! What do you think?
